During the past twenty-five years, the economy of the region has undergone a significant shift from a military/defense-dependent economy to one now more diversified and anchored around the activities of the Port of Charleston, multi-billion dollar visitor industry, healthcare industry, growing manufacturing sector and military. The region’s quality of life, history and culture also continue to attract new residents of all ages, helping to fuel the real estate and development industry.
25 Years of the Economic Forecast
The annual economic forecast for the Charleston region is a partnership project between the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce's Center for Business Research and the College of Charleston's School of Business and Economics. This published forecast includes an 18- to 24-month look ahead for the housing industry, visitor industry, airport and Port of Charleston. The annual forecast is released each spring at the Chamber's Annual Economic Outlook Conference which features insight into the national and regional economic outlook. A review of the past five annual forecasts show the forecast has had a remarkable rate of accuracy in predicting the economy’s performance.
